Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to examine awareness of new infectious diseases and ethical awareness regarding new infectious disease responses by optometrists during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: The subjects of the study were 123 optometrists who responded to an online survey for a two-month period starting from February 2021. A 5-point Likert scale was used to assess their awareness of new infectious diseases and their ethical awareness regarding the new infectious disease response. The SPSS software (version 23.0) was used to analyze the results.

Results: The mean score for awareness of new infectious diseases was 3.27, while the mean score for ethical awareness with regard to new infectious disease response was 3.92. Optometrists with experience in wearing personal protective equipment, disinfecting the inside of optical shops and test devices, communicating precautions when welcoming customers, and acquiring information about employee management at optical shops scored better in terms of awareness and ethical awareness. A positive correlation (r=0.27, p=0.003) was observed between awareness and ethical awareness.
Conclusions: Optometrists with an active attitude toward collecting information for the prevention of COVID-19 infection scored high in awareness and ethical awareness, and a higher level of awareness was connected to a higher level of ethical awareness. Thus, it is necessary to provide accurate information regarding and guidelines for optometrists to new infectious diseases for the purposes of higher levels of awareness of new infectious diseases and proper ethical awareness.
